Locals in the NFL: Taron Johnson, takeaways turn the tide in the Bills’ win over the Patriots

AROUND THE SHIELD – Josh Allen didn’t have to make history with five touchdowns in Buffalo’s 24-21 win over New England.

The Bills defense did it for him.

Buffalo recovered two fumbles and added an interception, including Taron Johnson’s second defensive touchdown of the year, to power a 24-0 second-half run against the Patriots on Sunday afternoon.

New England (3-12) took an early 14-0 lead, but James Cook tied the game with two touchdowns as part of his 100-yard rushing day.

After the second, Bills linebacker Terrel Bernard forced a fumble, which set up Tyler Bass’ 50-yard field goal and gave Buffalo its first lead of the game. On the next drive, Cam Lewis intercepted New England quarterback Drew Maye in the end zone.

Then came the dagger. Standing at his own 8-yard line with 10:17 left, Maye attempted to throw a pass backwards to Rhamondre Stevenson, causing the running back to turn behind the line of scrimmage.

In a state of confession, an already lightning-quick Johnson pounced on the loose ball just inside the goal line, and the former Weber State star gave the Bills a 24-14 lead with his first touchdown since scoring on a pick on Nov. 6 that they would never give up again. 10 against the Colts.

“Guys just have a knack for getting the ball and once we see it, it’s in our minds the whole game,” Johnson told reporters after the game. “I feel like we did a good job of winning the ball today.”
