What you should know: While Iowa was idle during Thanksgiving and the weekend, Northwestern played two games in Tempe, Arizona, on Thursday and Friday. The Wildcats lost 71-69 to Butler, but bounced back to beat UNLV 66-61 behind 23 points, 9 rebounds and 6 assists from senior guard Brooks Barnhizer.

Barnhizer was a preseason All-Big Ten honoree and made the league’s All-Defensive team last season. While still recovering from a summer foot injury, he missed the first four games of the season, but averaged 20 points in the four games played. He played 77 minutes in Tempe.

Wildcat junior forward Nick Martinelli and Barnhizer rank third and fourth in the Big Ten in scoring. Martinelli averages 20.3 points. Junior guard Jalen Leach, a transfer from Fairfield, has a 14.8 average.

Northwestern great guard Boo Buie has exhausted his eligibility and is now on a two-way contract with the New York Knicks.

“He had maybe the best year of anyone in college basketball last year,” Iowa coach Fran McCaffery said.

“But you really saw that Barnhizer and Martinelli in particular have taken the next step to become one of the elite players in the league.”

The Wildcats have held their opponents to 62.5 points per game and 41.5 percent from the field.

Iowa has won 12 of its last 14 games against Northwestern since 2012 and nine straight at home.

Hawkeye second-year guard Brock Harding surpassed his career high in the last two games, scoring 19 points against Utah State and 20 against USC Upstate. Against the latter, he had 10 assists and ranks fourth in the Big Ten with 6.0 per game.
