On the X-ray, his spine looked like it was held in place with four screws.

Back surgery changed Mangione

One of his former classmates at Gilman School in Baltimore told the NYT that he believes the back surgery changed Mangione. After the operation he even went dark. Mangione started in a co-working and co-living space in Honolulu, where he made friends with many people. RJ Martin, the room’s owner, said Mangione told him he had a back problem and was seeking relief in Hawaii.

Martin said Mangione confided in him that he was not in a relationship because he knew dating and physical intimacy were not possible because of his back condition. “I remember him telling me that and my heart just breaks,” Martin said.
