Luigi Mangione's lawyer says he wants to see evidence of the CEO's shooting

As the man charged in the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson remained in a Pennsylvania jail without bail, police officers in New York said they have made significant progress in the investigation into the brazen killing.

Luigi Mangione, 26, was linked to the scene of the shooting by fingerprints discovered on a water bottle and protein bar packaging and by a match gun police found when he was arrested in Pennsylvania and bullet casings outside the Hilton hotel brought to Manhattan, where Thompson was killed on Dec. 4, said Jessica Tisch, commissioner of the New York Police Department.

Mangione’s attorney, Thomas Dickey, said his client will plead not guilty to all charges against him and will fight extradition to New York, where he faces a charge of second-degree murder. In a CNN interview on Wednesday, Dickey said he wanted to see the fingerprints and ballistic evidence.

“These two sciences in and of themselves have come under criticism in the past in terms of their credibility, their truthfulness and their accuracy,” Dickey told the outlet. He said his office would have experts review the evidence before “we question its admissibility and the accuracy of these findings.”

Investigators also said they found writings from Mangione that contained “written admissions of the crime” and expressed “ill will” toward the American economy when he was arrested Monday after a tipster spotted him at McDonald’s .

Lawyer Thomas Dickey on Luigi Mangione’s outburst: “He’s irritated”

As officers escorted Mangione to the Blair County Courthouse for an extradition hearing on Tuesday, the suspect was captured on video turning to reporters and shouting phrases like “Completely out of touch and an insult to the intelligence of the American people.” Further comments from Mangione were inaudible.

In an interview with CNN, Mangione’s lawyer, Dickey, said the outburst was likely the result of his “frustration at being thrown into prison as a young man and being accused of very serious things.”

“He is irritated and upset about what is happening to him and what he is accused of, because of this outrage,” Dickey said, adding that he did not meet Mangione when those remarks were made outside the courthouse.

“Now he has a spokesman and someone to fight for him,” he told the outlet. “And that’s why I think you’re going to see a big difference in behavior.”

Luigi Mangione’s Reddit posts on health topics

Mangione appears to have posted on the website Reddit under the username “Mister_Cactus.” On the platform he refers to his health problems and a variety of symptoms that have been bothering him in everyday life for more than a decade.

His pain began in January 2022, he posted. In July 2023, he said his “back and hips were locked after the accident and my entire lumbar spine/hip has been out of balance since then.” He also wrote that he suffered from bladder and genital pain, back pain and sciatica following the back injury have. One post said he was experiencing numbness in his groin, bladder and below his right knee.

In a thread where another user asked for advice about surgery on the lumbosacral joint called L5-S1, the username associated with Mangione wrote of his own procedure: “The surgery wasn’t nearly as scary as I imagined. “Head, and I knew within a week that it was the right decision.”

In other Reddit posts by “Mister_Cactus,” he referenced health struggles with Lyme disease as a teenager and the “brain fog” that came with it. When he contracted Lyme disease at age 13 and didn’t make the team, he missed soccer tryouts. Then, at age 15, he noticed a “slight cognitive decline,” as he posted. He said his symptoms greatly worsened in 2017, when he was a student at the University of Pennsylvania, but further testing for Lyme disease came back negative.

In July 2018 he posted about restless sleep and in August of the same year he posted in a group about irritable bowel syndrome and asked for advice on changing his diet to improve his condition.
