Mac Jones strangely forfeited the Jaguars’ red zone game against the Jets

With Trevor Lawrence injured, Mac Jones is trying to rehabilitate his NFL career as the starting quarterback of the Jacksonville Jaguars. I say “trying” because it’s not going well. In terms of efficiency, Jones is one of the worst quarterbacks in professional football.

The eye test says the same thing. However, I think the hapless Jaguars shouldn’t fret too much about Jones being terrible if it helps them make their 2025 draft choices come April.

We saw that firsthand on Sunday afternoon when the Jaguars suffered a second-and-goal against the New York Jets. When Jones rolled out to find a Jets receiver on an errant play, he stopped playing altogether.

I’m not kidding.

Jones literally stopped dead in his tracks and came in for no reason to collect a sack, resulting in a seven-yard loss. As a result, the Jaguars would have to settle for a field goal. Man, come on:

Even if Jones didn’t trust any of the Jaguars’ pass catchers to throw, he has no reason to accept the sack here. He waved the white flag just because. He could have at least thrown the ball out of bounds instead of taking the negative play like every competent quarterback did.

Ah, but that’s the problem. Jones is not a competent quarterback and this type of sequence isn’t remotely surprising for him.
