Akhiok, Alaska – A magnitude 5.3 earthquake struck waters 109 kilometers south of Akhiok early Sunday, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).

The earthquake struck at 2:44 a.m. local time at a depth of 12 kilometers below the surface. The quake was centered offshore, near the southern tip of Kodiak Island. Residents in surrounding areas, including Akhiok and Kodiak, reported mild tremors.

The National Tsunami Warning Center said no tsunami warning was issued following the earthquake. Officials continue to monitor the region for aftershocks.

Earthquakes are common in Alaska, which lies on the seismically active Pacific Ring of Fire. Residents are reminded to check earthquake preparedness measures and secure heavy items at home.

Sunday’s event follows a series of smaller quakes recorded in the region in recent weeks. No damage or injuries were reported.
