Numerous aftershocks are being felt across parts of northern Nevada after a magnitude 5.7 quake struck 16 miles north-northeast of Yerington on Monday afternoon.

According to the USGS, the quake struck at 3:08 p.m., followed within minutes by other quakes that have continued since then.

The agency reports that there have been nearly 160 earthquakes in the area at the time of writing, with most occurring on Monday and early Tuesday.

The seismology laboratory at the University of Nevada in Reno says we will feel aftershocks in the next few weeks. Since central Nevada is more prone to major earthquakes, they weren’t surprised but are keeping an eye on the situation in the area.

“In Reno, we have major fault lines that run across the city, and the Mt. Rose Fault is one of the faults we are keeping a close eye on. There are also large faults in the Lake Tahoe area, we feel a lot of earthquakes from them.” “They are certainly capable of producing magnitude 6 to 7 earthquakes and that’s what we’re trying to prepare for and be ready for,” says Professor Christie Rowe, director of the Nevada Seismological Laboratory.
