Man accused of stealing credit cards from Orem Temple

OREM – A man is accused of stealing multiple credit cards from the Orem Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and then making thousands of dollars in fraudulent allegations.

Citing probable cause for the incident, Alexander Cedillo Herrera accuses him of several crimes related to the theft and use of other people’s credit cards.

Police suspect Herrera of “gaining access to secure lockers at the LDS Temple and stealing transaction cards,” the statement said. Herrera reportedly told officers that he “found” the credit cards.

Police said the man attempted to use a stolen card to purchase $839 worth of items from a Target, but charges were dismissed. Herrera then allegedly used another stolen card and split the purchase into two smaller amounts that went through. Police also identified several other allegations made using the stolen cards, including $170 at a Midvale Walmart, $145 at an Orem Walmart and small purchases at Orem gas stations.

“There are currently three known victims whose transaction cards were fraudulently obtained, possessed and used by (Herrera),” the statement said. All three victims told police they visited the Orem temple in November.

Herrera successfully charged approximately $1,200 worth of merchandise to only one of the cards, the statement said. Police said the total amount of fraudulent charges exceeded thousands of dollars.

The BYU Police Department is also investigating Herrera for similar crimes, the statement said. He is charged with unlawful use of a financial card, unlawful acquisition of a financial card and a number of offenses relating to unlawful activities. The statement said police expect additional charges to be filed as more information comes to light.
