Man faces charges after being found with weapons

Cole Nenon, the 21-year-old who showed up at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport with guns hours after a Christmas Day shooting, asked a police officer to take him into custody and kill him, according to court documents.

Shortly before 11:25 p.m. Wednesday, a Phoenix police officer was standing at the scene of a shooting in Terminal 4 that had occurred nearly two hours earlier – outside the airport’s security checkpoints – when he heard an airport employee yelling at him.

“What am I doing?”

The employee was holding a small rifle and a handgun, Phoenix police said in court documents.

Cole Nenon, of Scottsdale, then quickly walked toward the officer and held out his hands. According to court documents, he aggressively yelled, “Arrest me!”

After Nenon’s statements, the officer said in court documents that he recognized that the two guns the airport employee was holding could have belonged to Nenon. The officer said he didn’t know if Nenon was still armed.

When the officer asked him to step back, Nenon approached him again and raised his voice, according to court documents.

“Kill me! Kill me!” Nenon shouted.

The two got into a physical fight. While the officer tried to take Nenon to the ground to restrain him, Nenon’s leg struck the officer in the face, knocking off his glasses, according to court documents.

According to court documents, Nenon tried to get up and run away, but was again taken to the ground, where he spat at the officer.

A video of Nenon’s struggle with authorities at the airport showed him shirtless and barefoot.

Nenon reportedly arrived at the airport after a relative told him about the earlier shooting near a restaurant in the shopping and dining area on the third level of the terminal, in which four people were injured.

Police said Nenon had no connection to the shooting and recovered and confiscated three firearms. Court documents state that Nenon appeared to be mentally disturbed and was under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time.

Nenon was arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault on a police officer and booked into a Maricopa County jail.

At Nenon’s first appearance Thursday, a judge ordered him held on $10,000 bail. He was still in custody on Friday morning.

If Nenon posts bail and is released from custody, he will be monitored electronically. A judge said he would only be allowed to return to the airport if multiple agencies, including the Transportation Security Administration, the Phoenix Police Department and the City of Phoenix Aviation Department, allow him to do so.

Christmas Day shooting and stabbing at airport leaves 4 injured

Airport officials said the report of shots fired outside the restaurant came in just after 9:40 p.m. Wednesday.

Four people were taken to hospital: a woman with life-threatening injuries and two men and a teenager in stable condition, police said. A young girl was part of the group but was not injured.

The five people involved knew each other, police Sgt. Mayra Reeson said.

“I believe this was a family dispute that escalated,” Reeson said during a news conference early Thursday.

One of the men pulled out a gun during the fight and fired several times, hitting the woman and teenager, police said in a news release Thursday. The boy, who had a knife, then cut off the man who fired the gun, police said. Another man was also injured.
