Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was rushed to AIIMS Delhi in a critical condition on Thursday evening. The hospital later announced his death.

Manmohan Singh, former prime minister and one of India’s top economists, passed away at the AIIMS Delhi on Thursday evening at the age of 92.

Manmohan Singh, whose career in the Indian government began in 1971 with the position of economic advisor in the Ministry of Commerce, had been struggling with health problems for some time.

Manmohan Singh was born in Punjab in 1932 and was Prime Minister of India twice from 2004 to 2014. Earlier this year, he retired from the Rajya Sabha after 33 years in the House.

  1. Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was rushed to AIIMS Delhi on Thursday evening after he suddenly lost consciousness at home. He was admitted to the hospital emergency room in critical condition. However, he could not be revived and his death was announced on December 26 at 9:51 pm, AIIMS said in a statement.
  2. Prime Minister Narendra Modi mourned the loss of one of “India’s most outstanding leaders” and hailed Manmohan Singh’s rise from humble beginnings to a respected economist. Recalling Singh’s words, Prime Minister Modi said, “His wisdom and humility were always visible.”
  3. Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi regretted the death of his “mentor and guide”. In his post on X, Rahul said millions of people who admired former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh “will remember him with utmost pride”. Several other Congress leaders, including Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Mallikarjun Kharge, mourned the death of the former prime minister.
  4. President Droupadi Murmu said former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will always be remembered for his “service to the nation, his impeccable political life and his utmost humility”, adding that his death was a great loss to the nation.

  5. Industrialists of the country including Gautam Adani and Harsh Goenka expressed their condolences on the death of Manmohan Singh. In a post on but he achieved monumental progress through his actions.” Similarly, RPG Enterprise Chairman Harsh Goenka described Singh as a “true statesman” and “architect of economic reforms”.
  6. The state chief ministers also condoled the death of former prime minister Manmohan Singh, calling him a distinguished economist and national leader whose death was a real loss for India. Meanwhile, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah declared seven days of national mourning as a mark of respect for Manmohan Singh.
  7. Global personalities also mourned Dr. Manmohan Singh. Former Afghan President Hamid Karzai said in a post on X that India had lost “one of its most famous sons”. Former Maldives President Mohamed Nasheed wrote that he considered the former prime minister a “kind father figure” and a good friend of the Maldives.

The Congress on Thursday announced that as a mark of respect for the former prime minister, all official party programs, including the Foundation Day celebrations, will be canceled for the next seven days. Moreover, the grand old party also canceled its ‘Jai Bapu, Jai Bhim, Jai Samvidhan Rally’ in Karnataka’s Belgaum on Friday. Congress general secretary KC Venugopal said all programs of the party will resume from January 3, 2025.
  9. The Union government declared seven days of mourning in honor of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, PTI reported citing officials. The Cabinet will meet at 11 am on Friday to pay tribute to the “architect of India’s economic reforms”.
  10. The last rites of Dr. Manmohan Singh will be held in New Delhi on Saturday, Congress leader KC Venugopal announced, adding that an official statement on the same would be released soon. The mortal remains of the former prime minister were brought to his residence, 3 Motilal Nehru Marg, late on Thursday. According to ANI, Singh’s body will be made available to the public for their final respects.
