Maple Leafs vs. Blackhawks prediction, tips and odds for today’s NHL game

Even though Auston Matthews is playing his first home game in more than a month, Mitch Marner is the man to watch in the NHL player props market, especially his shots on goal when the Maple Leafs play the Blackhawks tonight.

There are three games on the NHL odds table tonight, including a thrilling showdown between the Chicago Blackhawks and Toronto Maple Leafs at Scotiabank Arena.

Auston Matthews returns to his home stadium for the first time in a month, but it’s the Mitch Marner prop market that has my attention when it comes to my Maple Leafs vs. Blackhawks predictions.

My Leafs picks
Mitch Marner Over 2.5 shots on goal (-125 at Sports Interaction)

My Leafs analysis
The Toronto Maple Leafs are coming off an impressive 5-3 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning, while the Chicago Blackhawks are coming off two straight losses, including last night’s 6-3 loss in Columbus.

Facing the Leafs at Scotiabank Arena this season is a tough task for any team, as the Buds have posted an NHL-best 10 wins on home ice in just 13 games. They average 3.23 goals per game and almost 30 shots on goal. They were also stingy defensively, allowing an average of just two goals per game at home.

Given the cross-border travel and the fact that they are playing on the second night in a row, it will be difficult for the Blackhawks to close out Toronto.

Additionally, the Leafs were on a roll, winning eight of their last ten games. The star of the show was Mitch Marner, who scored 17 points with seven goals on 26 shots during this period.

Marner’s shooting power is set at 2.5, a number he has managed on three straight and four of his last five shots while skating alongside John Tavares. He’s also averaged nearly 22 minutes of ice time in his last five games, giving him more chances to put pucks on net.

It’s also an exciting duel for Marner.

The Blackhawks rank 27th in shots allowed and average 32.6 shots on goal on the road.

Add in the overnight trip across the border and it could be a slow night for the Hawks. They have played four straight this season and averaged 37 shots per game in those matchups

Maple Leafs score first

I’m fully behind the Buds and rely on the puck line.

The Leafs were dominant on home ice, winning 10-3 and covering the puck line in nine of those 10 wins. Toronto is also the better team overall and should be in a back-to-back race with Chicago.

Finally, let’s take the Leafs, who score first. Toronto has scored first in 10 of the team’s 14 wins and is 10-1-1 overall when scoring first this season. So it’s always a good bet to expect the Leafs to win.
