Marvel Rivals reveals Wolverine, whose design is already causing a stir

Marvel Rivals developer NetEase has revealed the remaining characters that will appear at launch, including a first look at Wolverine.

The team-based 6v6 hero shooter is packed with characters from the Marvel universe (think Overwatch, but Marvel) and launches on December 6th with 33 heroes unlocked and free to play. Five new characters were revealed over the weekend: Squirrel Girl, Black Widow, Cloak & Dagger, Iron Fist and Wolverine. While fans debate the appearance of each character in the game, Wolverine’s design has garnered the loudest reactions, both positive and negative.

The Wolverine here is certainly… different. It’s not just him not Sporting his iconic mask, this Wolverine looks much younger than most seemingly expected, despite the streaks of gray in his hair, and seems to prefer a more casual outfit than a familiar combat costume. Note the belt with the “W” in case there is any doubt about who this character is.

Some are already saying they’re hoping for the release of Wolverine’s classic brown and canary yellow suits via premium skins. Others compare Wolverine from Marvel Rivals to a Street Fighter character or a character from the League of Legends animated series Arcane. But as others point out, Marvel comics, shows, and movies have featured Wolverine in casual clothing over the years, so perhaps fans shouldn’t be as surprised by his base look in Marvel Rivals.

The Marvel Rivals and Marvel Games teams are hosting a Fan Ask Me Anything on the official Discord on December 4th at 7:00 PM Pacific / 10:00 PM Eastern where they will hopefully provide some insight into Wolverine’s design. A first look at Wolverine gameplay is also expected soon, but based on the video above, we can expect Hulk to throw Wolverine through a portal to get behind the enemy team.
