Dozens of cars piled up on a bridge near New Orleans after dense fog caused several car crashes in Louisiana.

More than 40 vehicles were involved in a series of accidents that caused the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway Bridge to be closed in both directions for nearly seven hours on Tuesday. St. Tammany Parish Fire District No. 4 spokesman Jeremy Windom told USA TODAY on Wednesday: Mandeville Fire/EMS was informed of an accident at approximately 8:30 a.m. Tuesday on the southern portion of the Causeway Bridge near the mile marker 18 informed.

When units arrived on scene, they discovered an 11-vehicle accident and “then received additional information that multiple accidents were occurring further on the bridge as well as on the northbound bridge.” Several local and state agencies were called in to help deal with the accidents, Windom said.
