Matvei Michkov scores another overtime winner – NBC Sports Philadelphia

Matvei Michkov did it again in extra time.

The award-winning rookie winger scored his third OT game-winning goal to give the Flyers a 3-2 decision over the Blues on Saturday night at Enterprise Center in St. Louis.

Travis Konecny made an outstanding play, leading the 19-year-old to a break goal.

Last season, the Flyers only won four games in overtime.

Owen Tippett and Tyson Foerster also scored for the Flyers (12-10-3), who are 8-2-2 in their last 12 games. They played OT in eight of those 12 games.

The Flyers are also 11-5-2 since October 26th. During that period, only two teams have more points than their 24: the Hurricanes and Capitals, with 25 each.

John Tortorella’s club picked up its first win while playing on the second night of a back-to-back set. The Flyers were 0-3-0 in such situations and were outscored 16-9 before the win against St. Louis. They were able to build on their 3-1 win on Black Friday against the Rangers.

In that busy stretch of three games in four days, the Flyers won all three and allowed just five goals.

The Flyers won the two-game regular season series against the Blues (11-12-2). They beat St. Louis 2-1 on Halloween. This time they handed Jim Montgomery his first loss as head coach of the Blues. Montgomery, now 2-0-1 with St. Louis, was fired by the Bruins last week.

Check out all three of Matvei Michkov’s overtime winners for the Flyers in November.

• Michkov’s former development coach called him a “spotlight player” and we can see why.

The young Russian simply seems to have a flair for the dramatic. And the Flyers needed that kind of talent.

Michkov also had an assist on Tippett’s marker. He leads all rookies in goals (nine), points (19), power play goals (four), power play assists (five) and overtime goals (three).

“When the game is on the line, when something has to happen, some players like to hide in those situations,” Daniel Bochner said in July 2023. “Where he likes to be the guy that says, ‘Hey, give me that.’ Puck, I’m going to do something here.”

The Flyers’ postgame live team analyzed the team’s 3-2 OT win over the Blues.

• Aleksei Kolosov had a big performance for the Flyers, making 25 saves on 27 shots.

With 20 seconds left in regulation time there wasn’t much he could have done about Jake Neighbors’ game-winning goal. The Blues were 6-for-4 when they emptied their net on a power play. Kolosov made two saves in a row just before the neighbors scored.

St. Louis defeated Kolosov with 8:49 left to play in a 1-1 tie. Previously, Kolosov twice maintained the Flyers’ 1-0 lead with excellent saves on breakaway attempts. The first came in the last three minutes of the first period against Jordan Kyrou and the second against Mathieu Joseph in the first five minutes of the second period.

Foerster regained the Flyers’ lead 51 seconds after Dylan Holloway’s equalizer.

In his last three starts, the 22-year-old Kolosov is 3-0-0 with 69 saves on 75 shots.

Samuel Ersson, recovering from a lower-body injury, missed the ninth straight game. Could he be about to return? More about that here.

Blues goaltender Jordan Binnington was spectacular, stopping 28 of the Flyers’ 31 shots. With just under a minute left in the second period, he made a great save past Sean Couturier.

• How about Konecny?

Since October 23rd, he has been one of the top five scorers in the NHL with 27 points (11 goals, 16 assists) in 19 games.

More: Konecny was quietly “great” while helping Michkov

• Jamie Drysdale was ruled out for the 10th game in a row with an upper body injury.

After missing the last four games as a healthy substitute, Egor Zamula moved back into the lineup for Helge Grans. He finished the race as minus-1 in 14:39 minutes.

• The Flyers remain without a game for the next four days before hosting the Panthers on Thursday (7 p.m. ET/NBCSP).
