Matthew Short’s 29-ball 52 went in vain as the Adelaide Strikers fell 11 runs short of the Hobart Hurricanes’ 214 for 5 to hand the visitors their second successive win of the season at the Adelaide Oval on Friday.

Short chose to field and made an impression with the ball over himself in the opening over and dismissed Mitchell Owen in the opening over. Caleb Jewell struggled to get going but Shai Hope’s attack from the other end helped the second pair of wickets add 56 runs in 34 balls and gain momentum in his innings. Even with Jewell out in the seventh over, Hope and Ben McDermott kept the innings brisk, with the latter hitting a couple of sixes early in his innings.

McDermott continued the attack from one side, but until the 14th there was limited support from the other side. It was in the 15th over when Tim David took over the acceleration as Thornton hit three boundaries and a six back and forth. By the 19th, the attack from both sides continued until the end of the innings, with David scoring 33 runs in 14 balls and Chris Jordan adding 17 more in 10 deliveries. McDermott, the senior destroyer, remained undefeated at 68.

In response, the Strikers went hard against the visitors in the run chase, with D’Arcy Short and Matthew Short hitting 76 runs in just 38 balls for the opening wicket. It was a pretty quiet start before both beat Billy Stanlake in the second round. The carnage came from both sides before D’Arcy departed in the seventh over.

With a score of 105 for 1 at the end of the ninth over, the Strikers were well placed in the chase but were unable to consolidate this position in the second half of the middle over. They managed to score just 60 runs in the next eight overs, with the skipper making some subtle bowling changes and doing some good work in the outfield. With 30 runs needed in the last over, Jamie Overton hit some powerful shots but could only score 19 runs.

Short results: Hobart Hurricanes 214/5 in 20 overs (Ben McDermott 68, Shai Hope 37; Jamie Overton 2-27) beat Adelaide Strikers 203/6 in 20 overs (Matthew Short 52, D’Arcy Short 41; Chris Jordan 2-36 ). 11 runs
