The right-hander ticks two boxes that have value with the Mets right now – he has a close bond with Carlos Mendoza through their years together with the Yankees and is the type of low-cost, high-ceiling potential bullpen arm that David Stearns gravitates toward feels attracted.

ESPN was first to report the Mets’ interest in Loaisiga, who underwent season-ending elbow surgery last April after just three appearances for the Yankees.

However, Loaisiga is expected to be ready for spring training.

Loaisiga, who turned 30 last month, shares similarities with another ex-Yankee who has now joined the Mets – Clay Holmes – in that at his best he often throws a hard, heavy sinker and generates a lot of ground balls.

In 2024, four players who were Yankees when Mendoza was manager – Harrison Bader, Adam Ottavino, Luis Severino and Luis Torrens – played for the Mets.

This offseason, they reached agreements with Holmes.

Add Frankie Montas, a 2022-23 Yankee who also signed with the Mets this offseason.

Juan Soto, who wasn’t with the Yankees until 2024, was never a Yankee at the same time as Mendoza.

The Yankees could also seek a reunion with Loaisiga.
