Miami Dolphins, Tua, Best New York Jets in OT: 5 Instant Takeaways

MIAMI GARDENS – The Miami Dolphins hosted the New York Jets on Sunday afternoon at Hard Rock Stadium.

Tua Tagovailoa, Tyreek Hill, Mike McDaniel and the Dolphins had to beat the downtrodden Jets to keep their playoff hopes alive.

It took a comeback and an overtime thriller, but it happened.

The Dolphins defeated the Jets 32-26, keeping their playoff hopes alive.

Tua Tagovailoa completed a 10-yard touchdown pass to Jonnu Smith to win the game with 6:05 left in overtime.

The Dolphins are 6-7 and if they win, they have a chance.

The Jets are 3-10. They haven’t won in Miami since 2014.

Jets kicker Anders Carlson hit a 42-yard field goal for a 26-23 lead with less than four minutes to play.

But Dolphins kicker Jason Sanders forced overtime with a 52-yard field goal with 12 seconds left in the game. The play was initiated by a 45-yard kickoff return by rookie Malik Washington.

The Dolphins trailed 23-15 in the fourth quarter, but Tua Tagovailoa completed a fourth touchdown pass to Tyreek Hill and converted a 2-point pass to Jaylen Waddle to tie the score at 23.

Miami came into the game needing to win to catch Indianapolis and/or Denver for the seventh and final AFC wild card spot.

The Jets played without star cornerback Sauce Gardner and standout running back Breece Hall.

Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers passed for more than 300 yards and destroyed the Dolphins’ defense.

Terron Armstead’s injury could change the season

Dolphins Pro Bowl left tackle Terron Armstead left and came back into the game, then left again in the first quarter on Sunday when he was unable to play because of a knee injury.

When Armstead is not on the field, he is physically unable to do so. This is a very tough athlete.

Armstead appeared upset on the Dolphins sideline. Teammates comforted him.

Miami turned to rookie Patrick Paul at left tackle. He is massive. But raw.

Paul contributed a key block on a touchdown run in the first half. But he was also called out for a somewhat suspicious illegal formation in the first half.

Paul has all the physical attributes required of a left tackle. But his inexperience could play a significant role if he has to start for Armstead in the final four games of the regular season.

Would Miami move Kendall Lamm to its more comfortable left tackle? On Sunday, the Dolphins felt Paul had his best chance of success at left tackle, so they left him there.

Whether it’s fourth place or not, Mike McDaniel

The Daily Dolphin, or The Tape Don’t Lie, or also known as your friendly Dolphins journalist Joe Schad, agreed with Mike McDaniel’s decision to kick the field goal and avoid a fourth-down call to start the second quarter to take the lead 9:3.

Our Hal Habib disagreed.

But it was 4th-and-1. And Miami was bad at 3rd-and-1 and 4th-and-1 in McDaniel’s three-year tenure.

And Raheem Mostert was injured. And Armstead was injured and had to miss the game.

Habib later wondered why McDaniel tried on the 4th and 2nd when he couldn’t on the 4th and 1st. That was a successful implementation for Jaylen Waddle, but it also led to a field goal.

McDaniel is not immune to the knowledge that his offense has failed repeatedly in short-yardage situations and some goal-line situations.

He knows he has to look for new answers.

In both of these cases, in our opinion, McDaniel is not worthy of criticism.

He knows his staff. He just has to solve the problem that has existed for too long.

Questionable calls in the Dolphins vs. Jets game

McDaniel is usually pretty cool when it comes to dealing with officials, but there were a few plays on Sunday that he didn’t like.

One of them was an illegal reconnaissance visit to Paul.

The NFL tries to crack down on tackles who play too far back. At least they are taking action against it some Tackles have been made.

Defensive tackle Zach Sieler was called for a defensive sack by Emmanuel Ogbah.

This was an unusual decision and Sieler was essentially given a penalty while playing on a double team.

There was also a questionable pass interference call on cornerback Jalen Ramsey, who appeared to have just collided with Garrett Wilson after an incomplete pass from Aaron Rodgers.

The decisions go both ways, but on Sunday they seemed to go in the first half against Miami.

Ramsey was hit by Wilson for a 42-yard completion down the right sideline early in the third quarter after being beaten by a double-move.

Wilson also made a few plays against Ramsey in the first half.

Ramsey was picked off once and allowed Wilson a fourth-down conversion.

Ramsey made a nice pass break on a long ball for Wilson in the third quarter.

However, Ramsey most often covered Wilson, who exceeded the 100-yard mark.

Dolphins safety Jevon Holland missed an interception attempt early in the second half that could have prevented the Jets from completing a passing touchdown and taking a 20-15 lead soon after.

Holland hasn’t played as well this season as in previous seasons.

Dolphins cornerback Kader Kohou was hit by Davante Adams for a short touchdown.

Miami’s secondary wasn’t exactly stellar on Sunday.

Run game fights for the Miami Dolphins

Raheem Mostert missed this game due to a hip injury.

De’Von Achane was once again more effective in the passing game than in the rushing game.

On a 1st-and-goal from the Jets’ 8-yard line in the fourth quarter, Achane was tackled for a 4-yard loss.

Then, on a third-and-goal from the Jets’ 1-yard line, Achane was tackled for a 3-yard loss.

Tua saved the running game with a fourth down touchdown pass to Hill and a 2-point conversion to Waddle to tie the score at 23.

In the fourth quarter, McDaniel beat Jeff Wilson, who had done nothing for a long time, and freshman Jaylen Wright, who was looking for a spark.

The truth is that Miami’s running game has taken a step back in 2024.

And it’s taken a really big step backwards since right tackle Austin Jackson was out for the season.

On Sunday, Armstead missed almost the entire game with a knee injury.

Miami needs to rethink its rush plan for 2025.
