Minnesota Frost’s Maggie Flaherty received a two-game suspension for a hit on Boston Fleet’s Alina Muller

The PWHL announced Friday that Minnesota Frost defenseman Maggie Flaherty has been suspended two games for an illegal header check on Boston Fleet forward Alina Muller.

The incident occurred towards the end of the second period in the game between the two teams on Wednesday. Flaherty received a minor penalty for an illegal head throw after an automatic review by officials.

The following day, Fleet head coach Courtney Kessel told The Ice Garden reporter Melissa Burgess that the team had been downgraded to a minor because Muller’s own stick hit her head.

According to a press release, the PWHL’s Player Safety Committee has since classified the action as “unsafe and dangerous.”

“Flaherty exerted force in the opposite direction, extended her elbow high with no intent to play the puck, and made contact with an opponent’s head where such contact was avoidable,” the league said in a statement. “This violates PWHL Rule 48.”

Minnesota won the game 2-1. The Frost are 1-0-1 in their first two games while the Fleet are 0-2-0 in their first two games.
