Mohamed Salah reaches Premier League record for assists, surpasses Liverpool legend

If you thought Mohamed Salah couldn’t set another record, think again.

Salah continued his outstanding form this season with an assist against Tottenham as he set up Liverpool teammate Dominik Szoboszlai’s goal.

After James Maddison gave Spurs some hope, Szoboszlai gave Liverpool a 3-1 lead just before half-time when he hit the onrushing Fraser Forster with a left-footed shot.

Szoboszlai was played clean through Salah’s deft pass in what was a record-breaking moment for the Egyptian.

Thanks to his assist, Salah becomes the first player in Premier League history to previously score double figures in goals and assists Christmas.

He now has 13 goals and ten assists to his name.

The 32-year-old almost increased his goal tally in the first half when he hit the crossbar with a powerful shot with his right foot.

He also had a shot on goal saved by Spurs defender Djed Spence, in what was a dominant first-half performance from Liverpool.

They took the lead midway through the first half when Luis Diaz nodded in from a great cross from Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Alexis Mac Allister made the final score 2-0 with a header when he received the ball from Szoboszlai, who deflected a cross from the left towards the Argentina international.

Spurs equalized in the 41st minute with a well-struck long-range shot from Maddison after Mac Allister was beaten by Dejan Kulusevski.

Szoboszlai’s goal restored Liverpool’s two-goal lead and their star player Salah could not be denied a goal after the break.

After clearing a shot from Szoboszlai off the line, Szoboszlai fired home from close range before scoring his second goal of the afternoon, shooting into the goal with his right foot and almost clearing the goal for goal after Szoboszlai had him had prepared for 5-0 for Liverpool -1 lead.

With this brace, Salah has now scored 229 goals for Liverpool, surpassing club legend Billy Lidell in the Reds’ top scorer list. Ian Rush (346) and Roger Hunt (285) are the only players ahead of Salah in the Merseyside club’s all-time goalscoring list.

Salah’s goal tally of 15 puts him alongside Erling Haaland, who is on 13 in the league, in the race for the Golden Boot.

The Manchester City star has scored just one Premier League goal in his last six games.

Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka was also ahead of Salah with ten assists, but the Liverpool superstar has now caught up with him.

Dejan Kulusevski scored a seemingly consolation goal for Spurs in the 71st minute, cutting Liverpool’s lead to 5-2.
