MSNBC’s “O’Donnell, Psaki and Wagner” hit record low viewership despite a busy news week

A trio of MSNBC shows hit record lows in viewership last week as the network continues to struggle following President-elect Donald Trump’s election victory.

“Alex Wagner Tonight,” “Inside with Jen Psaki” and “The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell” all hit rock bottom last week, despite a busy news cycle that included the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson and the manhunt that followed after his killer, included a series of news stories related to Trump’s Cabinet picks, the fallout from President Biden’s announcement of a pardon for his son Hunter, and the overthrow of Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad.

“Alex Wagner Tonight,” which airs during Rachel Maddow’s 9 p.m. ET time slot Tuesday through Friday since “The Rachel Maddow Show” only airs on Mondays, averaged just 595,000 total viewers for the week of December 2, making it the Lowest ratings week since the show’s debut in 2022.

“Inside with Jen Psaki” averaged just 651,000 total viewers, marking the show’s smallest weekly viewership since its launch last year, when Psaki famously left her job as Biden’s first press secretary to join MSNBC.

“The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell” had more viewers overall than last week, but it hit a record low in the advertiser-coveted 25-54 age group. “The Last Word” averaged just 61,000 demo viewers last week, marking its smallest viewership since the show began in 2010.

The ratings lows come as Comcast recently announced that it will spin off NBCUniversal’s cable operations, including MSNBC, into a separate company that will not be tied to NBC News. As a result, the fate of shared resources and even the cable channel’s name and editorial direction are in question.

Meanwhile, “Morning Joe” co-hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski angered many viewers last month when they admitted that they had personally met with Trump after years of insisting that he was a “fascist” and a general is a threat to democracy.
