Multiple officers respond to an “unfounded report” of an active shooter at East High

Multiple officers were dispatched after an unconfirmed report of an active shooter at East High School, according to police.

Officer Yaier Javaid with the Salt Lake City Police Department said they received a call about a possible shooter at 11:06 a.m. Thursday.

As a citywide response, several officers were sent to the school. Javaid said officers were at the school within “seconds to minutes.”

He said a student resource officer was on scene and quickly confirmed with school administrators that there was no evidence of a shooting.

When officers arrived at the scene, they went into the building and found no evidence of a shooting.

No one was injured and no weapon was found.

Police first posted reports of a possible shooting at 11:12 a.m. on X, formerly Twitter

The school was briefly placed on lockdown while officers searched the building. By midday, students had resumed their normal class schedule.

It was not clear whether additional officers would remain on site for the remainder of the school day.

Javaid said the first emergency call came from outside the building. Investigators were working to determine exactly who the caller was and what information they had that led to the call.

Police were asked about the six-minute gap between the first call and the first posting on social media – and the time when parents first became aware of a possible incident.

Officials said their first priority is to secure the school and ensure the safety of students and staff.
