Multiple victim shootings have been reported at the Chicago Lawn home

Three people were killed and five others were injured in a shooting Monday afternoon in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood on the Southwest Side, according to the Chicago Fire Department.

The shooting happened near West 59th Street and South St. Louis Avenue around 2 p.m., CFD spokesman Larry Langford said.

Police Chief Jon Hein said no suspects were in custody as of about 5:15 p.m

The victims were four men and four women between the ages of 20 and 35, Hein said. Three of the men died from their injuries. Firefighters transported six to local hospitals, while two of the victims sought medical treatment themselves, he said.

Police had been called to the address previously, he said. Hein could not provide further details about the shooting, but said it appeared to have occurred at a social gathering.

“We have eight victims and we will solve this crime and find the people responsible for this terrible incident,” he said.

At around 4:15 p.m., some neighbors were still waiting to be allowed back into their homes. Ralph Campos, 61, said he lives next door to the house where the shooting occurred. The current residents have only been there for a few months, he said.

Campos was waiting at Nutrition59, a smoothie and tea shop across the street from the house. He peered out the window. He said he couldn’t remember any trouble with his neighbors, but said he would often see two young women at the door.

Maria Guadarrama-Garcia, 38, said it was her second day in business as co-owner of Nutrition59. She spoke with her husband, Jesus Sanchez, 43, who translated. She had just handed out flyers and menus with music playing when a neighbor called and told her to lock the door and hide.

“We got this business in this area and we liked it pretty well,” Sanchez said. “And then you see, that was our second day.”

There were a few drops of blood on the floor of the store. Neither Sanchez nor Guadarrama-Garcia were sure how it got there.
