Norwegian disaster series La Palma has entered Netflix’s top 10 TV show charts and become this week’s most-watched series. This means it is more popular than the new black comedy Not a good deedwho landed just behind.

In La Palma, A Norwegian family on vacation in the Canary Islands is in danger when a young researcher discovers worrying signs of an impending volcanic eruption that could trigger the largest tsunami the world has ever seen.

Although La Palma is currently the number one show on the best streaming service, but it doesn’t make our list of the best Netflix shows. In fact, it’s pretty terrible, as evidenced by its low 35% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. One reviewer even wrote, “This series is terrible, unrealistic to the point of farce. You don’t care about the characters and there’s no reason to because they’re indestructible.” Ouch! So if La Palma If you weren’t impressed either, here are three better disaster thrillers with over 80% on Rotten Tomatoes that you can watch instead.

Katla

  • Length: ~45 minute episodes

  • Creator: Baltasar Kormákur and Sigurjón Kjartansson

Katla is an Icelandic series set in the small town of Vik, a community in the shadow of the subglacial volcano Katla. One year after the catastrophic eruption of the said volcano, the lives of the residents are disrupted when secrets from the ice come to light. Katla is both a drama about the aftermath of a natural disaster and a science fiction film about what comes after. With an exciting plot and unexpected twists, that’s why Katla is one of six lesser-known Netflix thrillers that are 100% Rotten that you definitely need to check out.

Into the night

  • Length: ~36 minute episodes

Into the night tells the story of a plane full of passengers aboard a hijacked night flight from Brussels as they race to escape the sun as its deadly rays cause a global catastrophe on Earth. Based on the Polish science fiction novel The old axolotl by Jacek Dukaj, Into the night is Netflix’s first Belgian original series and a captivating thriller in a class of its own.

Flood

  • Length: ~43 minute episodes

  • Creator: Jan Holoubek and Bartłomiej Ignaciuk

Flood is inspired by the real events of the millennium flood that shook the Polish city of Wroclaw, the Czech Republic and Germany in July 1997. In the Netflix adaptation, hydrologist Jaśmina Tremer (Agnieszka Żulewska) and local government officials face life and death decisions to save the city at all costs. Although I don’t normally watch this, I have to say this Flood is a well-written and realistic piece of television that will keep you captivated.
