A northeast Iowa woman said her lottery dream came true this Christmas … when she won a quarter of a million dollars.

Darla Carpenter, 61, of New Hampton won the second top prize of $250,000 on the Iowa Lottery’s Winter Winnings scratch-off ticket. Carpenter’s winning ticket was a Christmas gift from her husband, who bought it at Kwik Star on East Main Street in New Hampton.

She accepted her prize on Friday (Dec. 27) at the lottery’s regional office in Mason City.

It was a surreal moment for her and her husband. Carpenter said: “None of us slept last night. I still don’t think it worked out, but now I have my photo and the check and it’s great.”

She added: “Dreams happen and all it takes is one ticket. I always believed that maybe one day that would be me.”

Carpenter works in a manufacturing plant and plans to retire in a few years. She said her prize money will make retirement even better.

Winter Winnings is a $20 scratch-off game with three top prizes worth $250,000.
