New Jersey leaders meet with officials about drone sightings

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy said he had spoken with state and federal officials about unusual drone activity in parts of the region, including near President-elect Trump’s Bedminster Golf Club, but stressed that there was no threat to public safety exist.

In a Thursday post

“We are actively monitoring the situation and coordinating closely with our federal and law enforcement partners on this matter,” he wrote. “There is currently no known risk to the public.”

Drones have been spotted flying in Somerset and Morris counties in recent weeks. In a Nov. 25 video, a Morris County resident named Mike Walsh spotted drones flying over Black River Middle School in Chester. The Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster is located in Somerset County.

Other drone sightings in the Garden State occurred in Bernardsville, Mendham and Parsippany. In response to unusual drone sightings over the northern and central skies of New Jersey on November 18, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed on Tuesday that it had issued two temporary flight certificates Flight restrictions.

One of them affects the airspace over the Trump property and is in effect until the end of this week.

“At the request of federal safety partners, the FAA has issued two temporary flight restrictions (TFRs) prohibiting drone flights over Picatinny Arsenal military base and Trump National Golf Club Bedminster,” the agency said.

Rep. Tom Kean, R-N.J., spoke Wednesday with Murphy, Mayorkas and other government and law enforcement officials.

“I will continue to urge federal authorities to work quickly to provide the public with a full understanding of the situation and work toward a resolution,” he wrote on X on Thursday.

In a statement, New Jersey state Sen. Anthony Bucco, a Republican, said some of the drones flew over his home.

“I have been assured that there is no immediate danger posed by these devices,” he said. “Our law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, continue to collect information about the drones and make it available to the public as it becomes available.”

Rep. Rebecca “Mikie” Sherrill, D-N.J., said she will remain in close contact with the investigation and provide updates as they become available.

Staten Island President Vito Fossella is asking the FBI to expand its investigation into drone sightings into the airspace over his New York City district. In one case, drone flights prevented a rescue helicopter from transporting a seriously injured accident victim to the hospital in Branchburg Township, New Jersey, Fossella said in a letter to law enforcement.

“The question becomes, what other impact could these drones have?” Fossella said. “Staten Island is home to two hospital systems, and the potential for these drones to hinder life-saving care during medical emergencies is deeply concerning.”
