New Mexico QB Devon Dampier commits to Utah football out of the transfer portal

Utah landed a commitment from transfer quarterback Devon Dampier from New Mexico on Wednesday night.

The sophomore quarterback’s signing comes after the Utes last week hired his former play caller at New Mexico, Jason Beck, as the program’s next offensive coordinator

In 2024, Dampier led the nation’s No. 4 offense and recorded 2,768 passing yards, 12 touchdowns and 12 interceptions for the Lobos. He also made an impact on the ground, finishing the game with 155 carries, 1,166 rushing yards and 19 touchdowns.

Dampier is the first newcomer to commit to the Utes this offseason. His decision comes at a good time, especially after Utah lost freshman quarterback Isaac Wilson, sophomore quarterback Brandon Rose and senior quarterback Sam Huard to the transfer portal.

Seventh-round quarterback Cam Rising’s time in Salt Lake City is also expected to come to an end, according to a report from 247Sports. It’s unclear whether Rising will choose to enter the portal that ends Dec. 28 or enter the 2025 NFL Draft.

It’s likely that Dampier will now be Utah’s starting quarterback of the future under Beck. He has two seasons of eligibility remaining and will play at the Power 4 level for the first time in his career when he officially commits.
