NFL star’s wife announces death of her son

Sondra Williams, the wife of San Francisco 49ers star left tackle Trent Williams, announced that their son Trenton Jr. was stillborn on November 24 at 35 weeks.

Sondra shared the news in an Instagram post on Sunday. Trenton Jr.’s twin brother died early in the pregnancy, she said.

“It was extremely difficult to process the saddest hello and goodbye I have ever had to endure,” Sondra wrote.

“No matter how hard I tried to prepare for our meeting, I was not prepared and never would be. After losing your twin early in pregnancy, I prayed and hoped that your diagnosis of Trisomy 13 was not true and would not be the fate of my long-awaited beautiful son-Shine. My firstborn and only son, I always wanted you, but God wanted and needed you more,” she added.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, trisomy 13 is a rare genetic disorder that affects the development of the face, brain, heart and several internal organs. The life-threatening condition often causes miscarriages and is estimated to occur in one in 10,000 to 20,000 live births.

Trent, a 14-year NFL veteran, is in his fifth season with the 49ers and has been named First Team All-Pro each of the past three seasons. The 11-time Pro Bowler hasn’t played in any of the 49ers’ last two games due to an ankle injury.

“This happened last week and he was in the hospital with (Sondra) and got to meet (his baby) and say goodbye,” 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday. “And then he had to cremate him on Friday, so he’s been dealing with that and working on it. But we’re all just trying to be there for him.”

“When you have to deal with tragedies like this, it’s hard as a coach, it’s hard as a friend, it’s hard as a family member, it’s hard for everyone,” he said. “But we spend a lot of time together and that’s the cool thing about being on a football team. Whatever you’re going through, good or bad, we’re going through it together.”
