No. 16 Wrestling goes 1-2 at the Journeymen Collegiate Duals

NASHVILLE – No. 16 University of Missouri wrestling went 1-2 at the Journeymen Collegiate Duals on Sunday, Dec. 22, in Nashville, Tennessee. The Tigers earned a win over Binghamton and suffered losses in ranked matchups against No. 20 Little Rock and No. 1 Penn State.

Mizzou won in 11 of the 30 games played throughout the day. The Tigers’ performance was crowned with a great victory Keegan O’Toole over Levi Haines of Penn State, 4-1.

Match One: No. 20 Little Rock
The Tigers lost their first match of the day 24:19 against Little Rock. Mizzou won five of 10 games and earned bonus points in two of their victories.

Freshmen Gage Walker opened the matchup with an impressive technical fall over Little Rock’s Tyson Roach that gave the Tigers an early lead. 141-pounder Josh Edmond got a takedown and points again in a sudden victory, securing his seventh win of the season. The Trojans picked up three wins and led 12-8 at halftime.

Keegan O’Toole returned to the mat with a ranking victory via technical fall, putting the Tigers back on the field. Returning national qualifier, Colton Hawks picked up the Tigers’ second straight ranking win by defeating Little Rock’s Brock DelSignore. Heavyweight Jarrett Stoner ended the duel on a good note. The Texas native got a big takedown in the third period to secure the win.

Game notes

  • The Tigers’ all-time record against Little Rock increases to 0-0-1 after their first meeting.
  • Walker’s bonus point win at 125 pounds marked his second career victory over Tyson Roach, his first coming at the Tiger Style Invite in November.
  • Kade Mooreat 133 pounds, fell 0-2 in his career against Nasir Bailey in a matchup of returning national qualifiers.
  • O’Toole’s technical fall was his fourth win of the season and continued his streak of bonus point wins in every game this year.
  • Stoner earned his first career doubles victory with a 7-4 decision in his first career start. The win was also Stoner’s second win over Miley this season.

Second game: Binghamton
Mizzou returned to the winning list with a 19-15 dual win over Binghamton. The Tigers won five of ten games in the duel, with the difference in three of these wins being bonus points.

At 125 pounds, Walker pulled off an upset over Binghamton’s 33rd-ranked Carson Wagner. Edmond kept the momentum going at 141 pounds and picked up his first bonus points win of the day with a major decision. Redshirt sophomore James Conway ended the first half of the matchup with a strong technical fall, giving the Tigers a six-point lead.

Fresh MU graduate Joel Mylin made his doubles debut at 165 pounds. O’Toole continued his winning streak early in the season, picking up another major decision victory. Weighing in at 184 pounds, the Hawks kept the ball rolling with a ranked win to secure more points.

Game notes

  • With the win, Mizzou moves to 3-0-0 all-time against Binghamton. The Tigers and Bearcats last met at the Collegiate Duals in 2021.
  • Walker picked up the second upset win of his freshman season, the first coming over UNI’s 31st-ranked Kyle Gollhofer.
  • Edmond’s most important decision was his third bonus point win of the season, following his two previous technical falls.
  • O’Toole and Hawks picked up their second-place wins of the day against Binghamton at 174 and 184, respectively.

Game three: No. 1 Penn State
In the final matchup of the evening, the Tigers suffered a tough 41-3 loss to the returning National Champions and No. 1 ranked Penn State. The Nittany Lions won nine of 10 games and earned seven bonus point wins. Mizzou took home a big win with 174 points between national title contenders.

Walker looked impressive starting the dual before dropping a close decision between highly touted freshmen at 125 pounds. Redshirt junior Josh Edmond fought hard and led a returning national finalist to sudden victory when he fired the go-ahead for the takedown.

Two-time national champion Keegan O’Toole took a sudden victory in the game of the evening. An overtime bout resulted in his victory over 2024 157-pound national champion Levi Haines of Penn State. The victory was the Tigers’ first win in the duel. Hawks held their own against four-time national champion Carter Starocci at 184 pounds and ultimately dropped the match.

The matchup included an additional match between Mizzou at the end Luqman Masud and Kurt McHenry of Penn State. McHenry picked up a victory in the exhibition bout.

Game notes

  • The loss increases the Tigers’ overall record against Penn State to 2-4-1
  • Walker placed fourth in the final 2023-24 high school rankings at 126 pounds, while Penn State’s Luke Lilledahl took first place.
  • In his match at 141 pounds, Edmond made his third overtime match of the season and his fourth match against a former NCAA All-American.
  • The 174-pound matchup of O’Toole and Haines featured two national champions on top. O’Toole won two national titles at 165 pounds in 2022 and 2023, and Haines won his at 157 pounds in 2024.
  • Haines and O’Toole previously battled at the 2024 World Team Trials, where Haines emerged victorious in the freestyle competition.
  • Masud scored his first career double in his exhibition bout against McHenry.

The Tigers will come home to host Cornell in the Beauty and the Beast event along with gymnastics on January 3, 2025. The event will take place at the Hearnes Center with action starting at 6pm. Tickets can be purchased here.
