Before the game

Syracuse football is wrapping up its first season under Fran Brown and seeking a rare 10-win season in Friday night’s Holiday Bowl.

Brown, a native of Camden, New Jersey, delivered as strong a debut season as one would have expected from someone who had no prior coordination experience, let alone the opportunity to become a head coach.

This is the second bowl trip Brown has made since getting the SU job. He was on the sidelines during last year’s 45-0 loss in the Boca Raton Bowl, along with prized quarterback transfer Kyle McCord.

The two have led SU’s return to the national polls, with McCord leading the country in passing after transferring from Ohio State.

Others who joined in Friday were there when the program plummeted with a 1-10 record in the Covid-shortened 2020 season before steadily rebuilding the program back to good standing.

Here is the list of inactives for the Orange (the players listed finished the regular season atop the team’s depth chart):

DL Rashard Perry

DL Chase Simmons

DB Devin Grant

DB Berry Buxton III

TE Dan Villari

CB Jayden Bellamy (transfer)

Secure. Jaeden Gould (transfer)

A win Friday would give the Orange just their third 10-win season this century, and it will come with a trophy, a splash of eggnog and a familiar sense of optimism that last spread through the fan base as the program celebrated its 10th won game six years ago.

And when the final seconds pass, a new countdown and a new challenge begins.

Tennessee awaits you in 246 days.
