No. 7 UConn closes out 2024 against Providence

STORRS, Conn. – The seventh-ranked UConn women’s basketball team (10-2, 1-0 BIG EAST) hosts conference rival Providence (7-7, 0-1) in the final game of 2024 at the XL Center on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. The game will air on SNY and the UConn Sports Network from Learfield (FOX Sports 97-9).

UConn will celebrate Bleed Blue New Year’s Eve on Sunday to close out 2024. Fans attending the game should wear BLUE.

Freshmen Sarah Strong was named BIG EAST Player and Freshman of the Week on Monday. Strong led the Huskies with 25.5 points and 11.0 rebounds per game. Last week, she added nine assists, two blocks and five steals in two games.

UConn narrowly fell to No. 7 USC 72-70 on Dec. 21 at the XL Center. The Huskies trailed by as many as 18 points but briefly took the lead in the fourth quarter. Strong had her third double-double of the season with 22 points and 13 rebounds against USC while adding five assists and four steals.

The Huskies are 48-21 all-time against the Friars. UConn has won the last 36 meetings between the teams. Providence assistant coach Kaili McLaren is a 2010 UConn graduate who won the 2009 and 2010 NCAA championships with the Huskies.

Providence lost 51-40 to Seton Hall in the Friars’ BIG EAST opener last Saturday. This season, Grace Efosa leads the Friars with 16.0 points per game. Head coach Erin Batth is in her second season at Providence.
