NYPD deploys additional police officers to Christmas markets in New York after suspected terrorist attack in Germany

The NYPD will flood Christmas markets in the Big Apple after a suspected terrorist attack took place at a Christmas market in Germany on Friday that left at least two people dead and dozens injured.

NYPD Assistant Commissioner for Counterterrorism and Intelligence Rebecca Weiner said in an interview with ABC 7 New York that additional police officers would be patrolling the markets “out of an abundance of caution and to make people feel safe.”

“This is a very festive time, it’s a very busy time in the city and we’re going to make sure that all of our Christmas markets and all of our holiday activities are protected… so New Yorkers will see an increased presence of officers at Christmas markets,” said them to the broadcaster.

Tourists at the Bryant Park Holiday Market welcomed the increased police presence Friday evening.

“While we’ve been here, we’ve seen a lot of NYPD officers around town, so I feel a little safer,” Sharon Ramon, 42, of Vermont, told The Post.

“Even if there isn’t a cop standing next to me right now, I’m sure there’s one a block or two away.”

She was horrified to hear about the attack in Germany but said it wouldn’t stop her from buying Christmas presents.

“Like everywhere else, no one at this Christmas market expected it.”

Robin Phillip, 30, visiting from Atlanta, echoed that sentiment.

“I would say I feel safe here,” he said.

“I have my family with me and as long as they feel safe, that’s all that matters.”

He called the German massacre “horrible.”

“I couldn’t imagine that happening here, though.”

The NYPD emphasized that there was no connection between the attack in Germany and New York City.

“We want to reassure New Yorkers that we will protect our infrastructure and events during what we hope will be a calm, happy and healthy holiday season,” Weiner said.

The announcement came hours after a 50-year-old Saudi doctor raced through the busy market in Magdeburg, hitting dozens of people where hundreds had gathered, local officials said.

He has yet to be named.
