Officials release details of a drone spotted near the U.S. Air Force base in Ohio

Government officials responded Monday to recent drone sightings near an Air Force base in Ohio, noting that the incidents appear to be unrelated to the unusual sightings in the Northeast.

The drones were spotted over the weekend near Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Greene County. Following the sightings, the base closed its airspace for four hours on Saturday. According to its website, Wright-Patterson is “the headquarters of a vast, global logistics system, a world-class laboratory research capability, and the U.S. Air Force’s premier acquisition and development center.”

In a statement to Fox News, Robert Purtiman, public affairs director for the 88th Air Base Wing, confirmed that officials were aware of the drones.

“I can confirm that small unmanned aerial systems were spotted near and over Wright-Patterson AFB between December 13 and 14,” Putman’s statement said. “To date, installation managers have determined that none of the incursions have had an impact on base residents, facilities or assets.”

“We are taking all appropriate measures to protect Wright-Patterson and its residents. Our units continue to monitor the airspace and work with local authorities to ensure the safety of base personnel, facilities and assets.”

On Monday, Pentagon press secretary Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder told reporters that the Pentagon did not believe the Ohio drones were related to the other drones spotted across the country. Ryder also said the recent drones were unrelated to those seen near Langley Air Force Base last year.

Putnam added in his statement that USAD does not “discuss specific measures to protect troops” for security reasons, but that it “reserves the right to protect our installations.”

“We ask people in the Wright-Patterson area to contact either local police or our security forces if they see anything suspicious, including SUAS or drone activity,” Putnam added.

The drones were spotted the same weekend that U.S. officials spoke by phone with reporters to discuss the unusual drone sightings. The conference call included representatives from the FBI, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the National Security Council (NSC), the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), and the Department of Defense (DOD).

During the call, officials appeared to downplay concerns about the drones but remained tight-lipped about their origin, which remains under investigation.

“We are doing our best to determine the origin of this specific … this drone activity,” an FBI official said. “But I think there was a slight overreaction.”
