Officials say three people were shot and one was stabbed at the Phoenix airport on Christmas night, apparently in a family dispute

Two people, including a teenager, were shot and another was stabbed at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport during a family argument on Christmas night, police said.

The incident occurred in a restaurant in Terminal 4 outside the security area, where emergency services found two people with gunshot wounds around 9:45 p.m. on Wednesday. Phoenix police initially said three people were shot.

An adult brandished a weapon and fired shots, striking a woman and a teenager who were involved in the altercation, Sgt. Phil Krynsky told CNN in a statement. The teenager, armed with a knife, then cut off the man who fired the weapon, police said. Another man suffered minor injuries in the fight.

“I believe this was a family dispute that escalated,” Sgt. Mayra Reeson told reporters early Thursday. Police said everyone involved knew each other.

Officers later arrested a girl and a man in the garage. The man had at least one stab wound, police said.

The four injured people were taken to a hospital. The woman who was shot was stabilized but remains in critical condition, while the three others were treated and released and questioned by investigators, Krynsky said.

No charges have been filed yet, according to Reeson.

“We don’t believe there are any suspects out there,” she said.

It is not clear whether the group was planning a trip or was at the airport for another reason.

“This is scary,” Reeson said. “It was Christmas Eve. Everyone’s trying to get home.”

The shooting forced the temporary closure of Terminal 4’s security checkpoint, an airport spokesman told CNN in an email.

“The incident has been resolved and operations are returning to normal,” the airport spokesman said early Thursday.

Adding to the chaos, a man who had heard misinformation about a possible active shooter at the airport arrived at the airport with a gun while police were investigating the earlier dispute. Reeson said the man was arrested after a standoff with police in the other incident.

No flights were affected.

“Everything picked back up pretty quickly,” Reeson added.
