The rapper’s family said his impact will “forever remain in our hearts” and encouraged fans to reach out via DM to express their condolences. “Thank you for standing by him throughout his journey,” they ended the note. “Today we celebrate a life that was extraordinary in every way.”

“We lost a legend last night,” Maco’s manager PoppaPerc wrote on his Instagram Story on Friday. He didn’t answer immediately Rolling StonePlease comment.

Last week, PoppaPerc shared a statement in which he wrote that Maco was “still fighting” and was “in more stable condition.” On December 15, the rapper’s family shared a statement on social media informing fans that he was in “critical but stable condition” and was “receiving the best care.”

“We remain confident as he continues to fight,” the statement said.

Although it is unclear what led to his death, Maco had struggled with health issues over the years. In 2019, he revealed that he had developed necrotizing fasciitis, a “skin-eating disease” that affected his face and scalp, after being “inappropriately treated for a mild rash.”

“I’ve been going through this for about three months and everyone I thought I could count on wasn’t there,” he wrote on Instagram at the time People. “People that I gave all my love to – everything I wanted just didn’t show up and that led to me not really trusting anyone or believing in anything.”

In 2016, he also survived a serious car accident in which he said he suffered skull fractures, a broken eye socket and broken vertebrae. “I feel alive!!!” he wrote on Twitter after surviving the incident.

OG Maco made waves in 2014 with the release of “U Guessed It,” which earned him a collaboration with 2 Chainz and a deal with Quality Control Music. He was inducted into XXL’s freshman class in 2015 along with Gucci Mane, Vic Mensa, Vince Staples and Fetty Wap.

Rolling Stone described Maco as “Atlanta’s newest rock star” in a 2014 profile, in which he discussed the success of “U Guessed It” and its virality at the time.

“Like in life, I was always aggressive, always angry, screaming and shitting,” he said Rolling Stone. “When it came time to make my music, I was calm – that was my calm. Then I couldn’t be angry in life anymore because I faced a lot of situations. I’ll just lose it? I’ll be gone. I’m going to prison for a long time. So I couldn’t be as wild as I used to be. But I’m still angry. I have to put it somewhere.”
