Oilers vs. Golden Knights prediction, tips and odds for today’s NHL game

The Oilers look like a Stanley Cup contender in every way, and goaltender Stuart Skinner hasn’t even played his best hockey yet. As Edmonton continues to improve, I want to see the Oil beat the Golden Knights in Vegas.

The Edmonton Oilers are heating up and traveling to Sin City on a three-game winning streak to take on the Vegas Golden Knights on Tuesday, December 3rd at T-Mobile Arena.

Edmonton will continue the good times as Vegas is a vulnerable opponent, and our Oilers vs. Golden Knights predictions are for the visitors to pull out a win tonight.

Let’s break down the matchup with my NHL picks before the puck drops at 10:00 p.m. ET on Sportsnet 1.

My Oilers analysis

Things are looking good for the Edmonton Oilers.

Edmonton has won seven of 10 games while averaging a whopping 3.9 goals per game and improving in the specialty area. The Oilers also had a lot more puck luck, with a 12th-place power play percentage of 22.2 and a top-ranked penalty kill percentage of 91.7 during the heat.

The 6-7-1 start was largely the result of an unsustainably low team shooting percentage of 5.82 at 5-on-5, coupled with a 26th-ranked 14.3 PP% and a league-low 59 .5 PK%.

Oil No. 1 goaltender Stuart Skinner has also posted a 5-1-1 record over time, and while his .890 save percentage and 2.86 GAA are still incredibly shaky, has he has also allowed two goals or fewer in three of his last four starts.

Skinner’s best is still ahead of him, and he posted a respectable .909 SV% and 2.658 GAA in 109 games in his first two full seasons in the league.

I’m also unimpressed with the Vegas Golden Knights. They have a 26th-ranked Corsi For percentage of 46.7, an expected goals percentage of 47.5 at 5-on-5, and have relied on the third-highest team shooting percentage (10.5%) , which is set for a statistical correction.

Edmonton can also win the special teams battle tonight.

The Oilers’ improved penalty kill pairs well with Vegas’ fifth-place 27.4 PP%, while the Golden Knights have a weak 21st-place 78.2 PK%.

Oilers money line

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins Over 2.5 shots

Tomas Hertl Over 1.5 shots

Oilers forward Ryan Nugent-Hopkins has taken more shots over the past three games while frequent linemate Zach Hyman (unknown) has been sidelined. RNH has amassed 11 shots and 19 attempts in the last three games, and I appreciate him playing alongside superstar Connor McDavid and Kasperi Kapanen in a 5v5 system because the two speedsters can create space in where he can find soft shooting points.

Of course, Kapanen isn’t a great shooter either (1.0 shots per game this season) and Nugent-Hopkins is an integral part of the No. 1 power play unit.

The final leg of this game in the same game is a nice multiplier, and Vegas forward Tomas Hertl has two or more shots in 11 consecutive games with an average of 3.45. He also regularly logs big minutes skating in a top-six role and with the No. 1 power play unit (17:13 with 3:04 on the PP).
