On Monday it will be windy and slowly getting cooler

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — Temperatures rose into the upper 50s and lower 60s across Central New York Sunday afternoon, and it remains very mild Sunday evening. When will we get cooler? Find out below…

Windy and mild overnight

Tonight a storm system will pass west of CNY and as a result there will be a gusty southerly flow at 30 to 40 mph, particularly over hilltops and around Watertown where there is one Wind warning In effect tonight through Monday as wind gusts could reach speeds of 50 miles per hour.

These gusty southeast winds brought highs well into the 50s and lower 60s Sunday afternoon and will keep temperatures from falling below the mid 50s for most of the night! By the way, Syracuse narrowly matched its record of 65 set in 1984 on Sunday.

Despite some rain Sunday morning and tonight and snow melting over the weekend due to the heat, the threat of flooding remains low in Central New York.

When will winter return?

That’s the question skiers and snowmobilers are asking, and as you can see below, things aren’t looking so good through the end of the year.

While it won’t be as warm as Sunday, Monday and Tuesday will remain a good 15+ degrees warmer than average with highs in the 40s to near 50 both days.

However, a new storm system is moving across the Northeast Tuesday night into Wednesday and will cause a MAJOR change in the pattern later this week.

Transition back to winter

Initially, this system will produce rain on New Year’s Eve Tuesday evening, but during New Year’s Day on Wednesday, the rain will transition to snow on Wednesday afternoon, with light accumulation of snow possible, particularly on the hills.

The more significant change occurs later Wednesday evening in the second half of the week as the air continues to get colder and snow accumulates east and southeast of Lake Ontario through the weekend. Stay tuned for more details.
