Patrick Mahomes injury update: Will the superstar quarterback play against the Houston Texans after ankle scare against the Browns?

Kansas City’s star quarterback, Patrick Mahomessuffered a potentially serious ankle injury in Sunday’s win against the Cleveland Browns. The injury occurred in the fourth quarter when Mahomes was tackled Tan Defender Dalvin Tomlinson. The cruel tackle left Mahomes wincing in pain on the field, raising concerns about his availability for the next few games.

Andy Reid talks about Patrick Mahomes’ injury

There were only a few moments, seconds to be exact, left in the final quarter of the game when Mahomes was injured rushing for a crucial fourth down conversion. The moment Mahomes jumped to throw a touchdown pass, he was tackled by Browns defensive lineman Dalvin Tomlinson, who caught his ankle underneath him during that play. At the same moment, Mike Hall Jr., the free safety, put the finishing touches and hit his lower body, bending him backwards in a very bad collision. He limped off, clearly in pain, and was replaced by backup quarterback Carson Wentz to finish the game.
After the game, Mahomes addressed his injury and expressed uncertainty about his availability for Saturday’s game against the Houston Texans. “It’s hard to say right now,” Mahomes noted. “I feel like I could have finished the game under different circumstances, but I thought the smart decision … was to bring in Carson Wentz. You just do what you have to do to get back, and I think that’s the most important thing.

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid confirmed that Mahomes’ ankle was not broken and stressed the importance of beginning rehabilitation immediately. “It hurts and he’ll start the rehab part over time and then we’ll just have to see how he does here,” Reid explained. Despite Mahomes’ desire to stay in the game, Reid chose caution. “He wanted to fight for it, but we have good support in Carson and it was good to get him some reps.”
Mahomes has been labeled week-to-week, which is a concern for the Chiefs as they look to secure the No. 1 seed in the AFC. With their current record of 13-1, they are the team to beat, but the Buffalo Bills are still close behind at 10-3.
The Chiefs are preparing for a particularly difficult phase for their games against the Houston Texans and against the heavyweights Pittsburgh Steelers and Denver Broncos. All teams have very solid walls. To make matters worse, a home berth will be decided in the playoffs, and while Mahomes’ injury may seem frivolous at best, it will be terribly significant for the team. They seem optimistic that he will be able to participate in Thursday’s practice, which will increase his chances of playing against the Texans.
For Kansas City, the big picture remains clear: Ensuring Mahomes is fit for the postseason is non-negotiable. Their quest for a historic third straight Super Bowl victory depends on the recovery of their star quarterback. As Reid aptly stated, “There was no reason to risk further injury.”
