Patrick Mahomes makes big revelation about Travis Kelce’s key role in Chiefs’ victory

The Chiefs pulled off another magic trick, coming back to beat the Chargers 19-17 on Sunday Night Football to clinch their ninth straight AFC West title. Of course, Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce turned back the clock with several crucial plays as they won the game.

Following the contest, Mahomes spoke to reporters and surprisingly revealed a crucial play in the third period that secured the win. Under pressure, Mahomes threw in Kelce for a nine-yard completion that left the Chiefs with the rest of the clock until the final field goal.

As it turned out, Kelce didn’t run the route he was supposed to run, instead finding space before letting Mahomes do the rest.

Andy Reid said Mahomes told him he would “make something up” and later Mahomes noted that Kelce should run a corner route. Instead, he sat in the middle of the field and waited for Mahomes to notice him.

Kelce’s improvisation and chemistry with Mahomes allow him to change the play he’s supposed to be running when the moment calls for it.

Overall, Kelce finished the game with five catches for 45 yards, while Mahomes threw for 210 yards and a touchdown. He didn’t turn the ball over, helping Kansas City maintain control of the ball late.

One of the biggest takeaways was also the great performance of the defense. The Chargers are a strong team and will be in the playoffs, but the defense held them scoreless in the first half. Los Angeles eventually staged a comeback, even though the game was within reach, before Kelce and Mahomes took matters into their own hands.

Thanks to the Bills’ loss to the Rams, the Chiefs have a two-game lead in the AFC with four games left. They will face the Browns next week before a matchup with the Steelers on Christmas Day. If they both win, number 1 could be decided in the next few weeks.
