First quarter

The Patriots won the coin toss and elected to take the opening kick for the first time this season. The drive quickly got going behind tight ends Hunter Henry, Austin Hooper and Rhamondre Stevenson. After two Cardinals injuries – including former Patriot Mack Wilson – a tackle on Layden Robinson prevented a 15-yard third-down conversion. On 3rd-and-10 after a Cardinals penalty, a conservative screen call to Pop Douglas gained just four yards. This set up a 53-yard field goal that Joey Slye missed wide left.

After the miss, Arizona took over the first drive at the 43-yard line and was started by a man stick to Marvin Harrison Jr., who took the ball 23 yards. New England then held when Christian Elliss brought down Kyler Murray in the open field, leading to Chad Ryland missing a 49-yard field goal. (Patriots 0:3 Cardinals)

Two poor reps from left tackle Vederian Lowe – one in the run game and one that resulted in a sack – set New England up for a 3rd-and-12. Maye’s short pass went perfectly to Douglas, who fumbled after a big hit, causing the ball to eventually be caught by Kendrick Bourne. Then Bryce Baringer punted.

Arizona’s second drive began with a big 53-yard strike from James Connor that got the offense going outside the red zone. After working inside the 10, the receiver fumbled after an end-around against Greg Dortch in front of the goal line and the ball was recovered in the end zone by a Cardinals offensive lineman, Jonah Williams, for a touchdown. (Patriots 0:10 Cardinals)

Second quarter

Two short completions forced the Patriots to a first 3rd-and-6 on the next drive, where Ben Brown’s second bad snap of the game resulted in a punt.

The Cardinals offense got two first downs with the football before a 3rd-and-6 just short of midfield. Murray looked for Harrison Jr. down the left sideline, but perfect coverage by Christian Gonzalez led to an incompletion.

New England’s next possession began on the ground as Stevenson completed three runs for 18 yards. Some Maye scrambles with no open receivers led to a 4th-and-1, where a pitch to Stevenson yielded just enough to move the chains. A screen to Marcus Jones then helped gain 18 yards before two runs to Gibson backwards. On 3rd-and-16, a short pass to Bourne gained just eight yards and led to a 50-yard field goal by Slye. (Patriots 3: 10 Cardinals)

With two minutes left in the half, Arizona’s push started promisingly before two penalties resulted – a layup was drawn by Keion White as he came home for a sack inside. On 3rd-and-11, the speedster gained 39 yards after a short pick play against Dortch – with Kyle Dugger missing a tackle. Inside the red zone in the third, Gonzalez played the hands of Harrison Jr. to throw the ball into the end zone. Ryland’s field goal was good. (Patriots 3: 13 Cardinals)

A handoff to Stevenson ended the first half.

Third quarter

Early in the second half with the ball, some poor tackling by New England led to Arizona having two first downs over midfield. A sack by Deatrich Wise then resulted in a 15-yard gain due to an apparent horse collar tackle. The Cardinals then couldn’t overcome an offensive hold as Gonzalez recorded another pass breakup in the third to force a field goal. (Patriots 3: 16 Cardinals)

After trailing by two scores, two consecutive RPO runs on Stevenson picked up a total of 25 yards to get the offense going. Then, with Gibson in the backfield, the faster defender bounced outside on a run for a 29-yard gain and moved into the red zone. Another run to Gibson gained nine more yards before the defense was packed on 3rd-and-1. Because he remained on the field on 4th-and-1, a run up the middle to Stevenson was blocked.
