Paul Mescal — and his signature shorts — are taking over SNL

A pair of short shorts hate to see Paul Mescal coming. The teeny-tiny, thigh-high gym shorts have become the actor’s signature fashion item, not to mention his official off-duty uniform (though he’s also worn them on the red carpet). In fact, the leg-baring piece has become such an iconic part of his wardrobe that Mescal’s love of showing off a little knee was even highlighted during his opening monologue as host Saturday Night Live last night, where Shaboozey appeared as the musical guest.

Mescal’s opening skit began with the star talking about how proud he is to be Irish. “A lot of people ask if we wear kilts – no, they’re Scottish,” Mescal said. “Traditionally, the Irish wear shorts.” The camera then panned to a paparazzi shot of Mescal wearing one of his favorite pairs: a striped blue-and-white workout model that he paired with a zip-up jacket and wired headphones on a daily Sweetgreen run wore. (A mood for sure.)

The fashion part didn’t end there. Soon after, Mescal joined them SNL Cast member Marcello Hernandez, who happened to be wearing the exact same short shorts (with a sleek button-up, no less?). “They’re way too short,” Mescal said of the shorts, to which Hernandez replied, “You know what they say, Paul – the shorter the shorts, the taller you look.” It was the perfect nod to how awesome that is Internet continues to be on his microshorts; Obvious, considering they were just immortalized SNLhe won’t send her into retirement anytime soon. They are famous in their own right!
