On Friday, he took to X (formerly Twitter) and shared the list, with “All We Imagine as Light” by Payal Kapadia topping the list. Obama wrote: “Here are a few films I would recommend this year.” The note read: “Barack Obama’s favorite films of 2024 – All We Imagine as Light, Conclave, The Piano Lesson, The Promised Land, The Seed of the Sacred Fig, Dune: Part Two, Anora, Didi, A Complete Unknown.”

“All We Imagine as Light” has received worldwide recognition. The film made history after its Grand Prix victory at the Cannes Film Festival. This success made Payal the first Indian filmmaker in 30 years to appear in the main Cannes competition. The film was also nominated for two Golden Globes and the 2025 Critics’ Choice Awards. Recently, Payal received the Spirit of Cinema Award at the 29th International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK).

All We Imagine As Light tells the story of Prabha, a worried nurse who receives an unexpected gift from her estranged husband, and Anu, her young roommate who is looking for intimacy with her boyfriend. Their trip to a beach town allows them to confront their desires and feelings. The film stars Kani Kusruti, Divya Prabha and Chhaya Kadam in the lead roles. The film is an official Indo-French co-production between Petit Chaos (France) and Chalk & Cheese and Another Birth (India).
