“Penei Sewell Stiff-Arming Bears Defender on Lions’ Trick Play Becomes New Meme”

“Penei Sewell Stiff-Arming Bears Defender on Lions’ Trick Play Becomes New Meme”

It was only a matter of time before the Detroit Lions came up with another trick play for an offensive lineman. Coincidentally, one of those events came on Thanksgiving.

On the very first series of the Lions’ afternoon game against the Chicago Bears on Thursday, Jared Goff faked a handoff and threw the ball to offensive tackle Penei Sewell, who appeared ready to throw it offside. Sewell wisely realized that no one was open and instead ran with the ball toward the sideline, cornering a poor Bears defender.

Fans liked seeing Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson reach into his pocket, and they liked Sewell’s wild move even more:

Ultimately, the Lions avoided disaster with a disastrous trick play, but they held a firm lead through two quarters and led the Bears 16-0.

Had Sewell completed a pass, he would have been only the third offensive lineman in NFL history to do so. Still, kudos to Sewell for the ability to hold on to the ball and avoid a turnover.

There’s always next time.
