Penn State football overtakes Maryland to open Big Ten championship route

STATE COLLEGE – Penn State’s path to the Big Ten Championship Game is all but assured after they defeated Maryland 44-7 on Saturday night.

Five sacks, three interceptions and just 197 offensive yards allowed led the Nittany Lions to their 11th^Th Win of the year in a convincing way. After giving up a touchdown on their first defensive stand of the night, the Lions caved in and locked the Terrapins out of the red zone for the rest of the night.

Quarterback Drew Allar went 17 of 26 for 171 passing yards and a touchdown. Nick Singleton added 87 rushing yards on 13 carries and scored two touchdowns, and Tyler Warren caught Allar’s touchdown pass and finished the game with 68 receiving yards on six catches. Beau Pribula finished the game with a 15-yard touchdown pass to Tyseer Denmark.

Maryland’s only touchdown came on a 25-yard reception 14 seconds into the game. Penn State’s defense — led by Abdul Carter’s two sacks and interceptions by Audavion Collins, Dejuan Lane and Tony Rojas — forced seven punts and capitalized on five turnovers.

With Ohio State’s surprising loss to Michigan early Saturday afternoon and Maryland’s loss in tow, Penn State has an open path to the Big Ten championship and a shot at its first Big Ten title since 2016.

The Lions capped a six-play, 52-yard drive with an 18-yard scoring run by Nick Singleton. This is his second score of the night and he leads all rushers with 87 yards on 13 carries.

END 3Q: Penn State 31, Maryland 7

15 minutes and a whole lot of nothing. Penn State managed just 77 total yards in the third quarter and converted on just one of three third-down attempts. Elsewhere, the defense held Maryland to just 27 yards and racked up two more sacks for a total of five tonight.

HALFTIME: Penn State 31, Maryland 7

Ryan Barker’s 53-yard field goal attempt to end the half was blocked by Maryland’s defense. Penn State outrebounded Maryland 259-97, and Terrapins quarterback MJ Morris was sacked three times – all in the first quarter. The second quarter alone accounted for 153 of Penn State’s total yards.

Abdul Carter was the standout on Penn State’s defense. He posted four tackles with one sack. Zion Tracy added another sack and Zane Durant and Amin Vanover each contributed half a sack. Audavion Collins and Tony Rojas each contributed an interception.

Allar went 13 of 20 for 140 yards and a touchdown in the first quarter, and both he and fellow quarterback Beau Pribula scored a one-yard rushing touchdown. Tyler Warren leads all receivers with 60 yards and a touchdown, and Nick Singleton leads all rushers with 41 yards and a touchdown on nine attempts.

The Lions’ defense did what it does best and forced a turnover on downs after the Terrapins were stumped on a fourth down conversion attempt. Drew Allar scored on a one-yard keeper after a six-yard run by Kaytron Allen on the previous play.

Nick Singleton concedes a two-yard gain to give the Lions their first lead today. So far he has rushed for 11 yards on six carries.

The Lions are feeling cold at the start of the afternoon. They blew their last two drives and only gained 42 total yards in the first quarter. However, their defense with three sacks dominated Maryland since the opening score.
