City needed a good jump to get on the scoreboard and take the lead on Sunday and then watched as Bruno Fernandes’ late attempt to equalize went narrowly wide of the far post.

But the attack wasn’t very good and the defense made things worse late on, making two terrible defensive errors that allowed Man United to collect all three points at the Etihad Stadium.

How did Pep Guardiola view the defeat?

Pep Guardiola reaction – Manchester City coach reacts to late Manchester derby collapse

“It has happened many times this year. We gave away a lot against Feyenoord. We are not nice in the way we play. It was so fluid before and now we are having problems for other reasons. We gave everything and apart from one chance from Bruno it was almost over.”

“Nothing special. We gave away both goals. …It is what it is. What can I say? It’s a tough season. … We didn’t play our best because we’re not our best in some positions.”

“There is no defense. The result of last season’s games: We didn’t lose eight games in two seasons, now we’re losing eight in a few days. We can’t talk about goals if we lose a lot of games, and that’s what happened most of the time. We have to keep going and try to find a solution and try to win games.”

“We need results to lift our spirits. As things get worse, this is what the reality is. I am the manager of these players and this club. I need to find a solution and I haven’t found it yet. That’s the truth.”

Reaction from Phil Foden – On the late lead against Manchester United

Foden: “Overall, the game was in our hands. I thought we controlled the game and it seems like we switch off and they score two goals. It’s about sticking together, rebuilding and trying again.”

More Foden: “We’re not used to losing so many games, but you have to experience that in life.” When things go wrong, things seem to go even worse. We have to stick together, regroup and get going again. … 100 percent, I felt like we were in control 1-0. You can concede a 1-1, but not immediately afterwards. It is unacceptable. … It becomes a mental thing where you feel like it’s going to happen again. We have to get back to winning ways.”

Reaction from Bernardo Silva: “We’re playing like U15 players at the moment.”

I don’t know what happened in the end. I thought we played a very good game and football at this level is about doing the little things right. We have a corner in the 87th minute that ends up with your goalkeeper. We’re playing like U15 players at the moment.”

“87. Minute, corner for your team and the ball lands at your goalkeeper. for a punishment. You can’t make these stupid decisions. You pay the price.”

“I know we don’t want that, but as I said, if you look at the game up until the 86th minute, there was only one team that could win this football game. And then on a Man City corner you leave a centre-back behind, Ruben stays behind and the ball ends up going to our goalkeeper. There’s no excuse for that at this level.”
