West Des Moines police on Wednesday identified the woman who died in a car crash Monday morning as 45-year-old Jamie Alertsen of Pleasantville.

According to a news release from the West Des Moines Police Department, police and other first responders were dispatched to northbound Interstate 35 at Mills Civic Parkway in West Des Moines for a crash around 6 a.m. Monday. Two cars were involved in the crash, West Des Moines Police Department spokesman Sgt. Dan Wade told the Register.

Alertsen died from her injuries. Two other people, a 19-year-old woman from Pleasantville and a 27-year-old man from Des Moines, suffered non-life-threatening injuries, the release said. Wade did not specify which car the injured were in, nor did he provide any information about how the accident occurred.

The accident initially blocked at least two lanes of traffic on the way to the main thoroughfare in the morning. According to the Iowa Department of Transportation, at least one lane remained closed until the accident was finally cleared around 10 a.m.

No arrests or charges have been filed and the cause of the crash remains under investigation as of Wednesday afternoon, Wade said.

According to the DOT, there have been 326 fatalities on Iowa roads in 2024 as of Wednesday.
