Police say a man shot his brother in Magna and then beat and killed a pregnant woman

MAGNA — A Utah man was arrested Tuesday after police said he shot his brother in the leg and then caused a fatal crash while fleeing the scene.

Sasa Scott Hamilton, 20, was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail Tuesday night on investigation of shooting a person causing serious injury, two counts of shooting a person toward a person and obstruction of justice. The investigation into the fatal crash was ongoing and police said they could recommend additional possible charges against Hamilton.

Around 8:40 p.m., West Valley police were called to a residence near 3500 South and 3800 West for a shooting. A 26-year-old man “bleeded profusely from his left thigh and was quickly transported to a local hospital for treatment,” a police affidavit said.

According to a witness, the victim came to the apartment complex with three other people. According to police, Hamilton approached her vehicle while she was still in the parking lot and got into an argument with the man.

“The witnesses tried to intervene and pulled the two away from each other. “(Hamilton) then pulled out a handgun and pointed it at (the man’s) legs before pulling the trigger several times,” the affidavit states.

Hamilton drove away in a Toyota Sequoia after the shooting. According to the Utah Highway Patrol, just after 9 p.m., he ran a red light at 8000 West on State Route 201 and crashed into a Ford Escape, causing it to catch fire and kill a 34-year-old pregnant woman.

“After colliding with the Ford, the Sequoia continued to drive forward and struck a Kia Forte,” the highway patrol said. “The driver of the Ford Escape was taken to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead. The occupants of the Kia suffered minor injuries.”

Shortly before 11 p.m., Hamilton turned himself in to officers in Magna. The affidavit says he told police he dismantled the gun used in the shooting and threw it several feet away.

“(Hamilton) admitted firing a handgun at his brother following a physical altercation and then fled the scene, making several attempts to evade arrest. Additionally, (he) was involved in a fatal accident and left the scene on foot,” the arrest report states. “The accident … resulted in the death of a 34-year-old woman, which remains under investigation.”
