Preview: Arsenal vs Crystal Palace | Pre-game report | News

We want to reach the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup with kick-off on Wednesday at 7.30pm against Crystal Palace at the Emirates Stadium.

As we focus on fighting for our first League Cup title since 1993, we have beaten Bolton Wanderers 5-1 and Preston North End 3-0 in the competition so far.

A win over Palace would see us face Newcastle United, Brentford, Southampton, Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur or Manchester United in the semi-finals.

Patience pays off

Oliver Glasner’s team is now unbeaten in five games across all competitions and has only lost one of the last nine games.

The Eagles have had a slow start to the Premier League this season, losing to Brentford and West Ham United before playing out three straight draws against Chelsea, Leicester City and Manchester United.

Further defeats against Everton, Liverpool and Nottingham Forest followed, but that all changed with a 1-0 home win against Tottenham.

Since then they have taken 10 points from seven league games, including wins over Ipswich Town and Brighton & Hove Albion and a 2-2 draw with Manchester City.

In the Carabao Cup, Palace beat Norwich City 4-0 at Selhurst Park in the second round and beat Aston Villa 2-1 away in the round of 16.

WHAT THE MANAGERS SAY

Arteta: “It will be very difficult – if you look at the recent results and the approach they are taking, the quality of their people and also the way they are trained. It’s always very difficult, it’s also another level of difficulty when you play against a team twice in four days, so we prepared for that.

“You can sometimes do things to teams by doing certain things in relation to the game and the game scenario. The result obviously has a big influence. We will face one game or another.”

Every word from Mikel’s press conference outside the Palace

Glasner: “I am pretty sure Eddie (Nketiah) will play minutes at his old stadium.

“I won’t tell anyone who will start tomorrow! We have three excellent goalkeepers. Dean (Henderson) is doing really well, Matt (Turner) is a fantastic guy and did a great job at Villa, and Remi Matthews too. That’s it.” “Whoever plays has our confidence and will be a good goalkeeper for us.”

TEAM NEWS

From our perspective, there are no new injury concerns as the only absentees remain Riccardo Calafiori (groin), Oleksandr Zinchenko (punch), Ben White (knee) and Takehiro Tomiyasu (knee).

For Palace, Daniel Munoz is serving a suspension after being shown his fifth yellow card of the season in Sunday’s win over Brighton. Joel Ward (calf), Franco Umeh-Chibueze (hamstring), Adam Wharton (groin), Matheus França de Oliveira (groin) and Chadi Riad Dnanou (lack of match fitness) are also expected to be unavailable.

In his pre-match press conference, Oliver Glasner reported that they will make a late decision on Eberechi Eze after “he got a hit on his foot and it got swollen.”

TACTICS CONVERSATION

Adrian Clarke, Writing in the official matchday program: Crystal Palace relies on a very balanced 3-4-2-1 formation under Oliver Glasner.

On the ball, the clever Austrian naturally pushes both full-backs high and wide, forming a five-man attack, but when the Eagles lose the ball they quickly shorten to a 5-4-1.

Long passes from back to front are often encouraged by the Palace head coach, who likes to use goalscorer Jean-Phillipe Mateta as an outlet. In recent weeks he has been great at holding the ball up to support runners, with the two number 10 players Eberechi Eze and Ismaila Sarr often being quite difficult to reach in these half-space pockets.

In this cup tie it is important for us to ensure that these three teams do not meet each other through direct, close-range attacks.

FACTS AND STATISTICS

17-year-old Ethan Nwaneri has scored three goals in two League Cup games for us this season, scoring three of his four shots on target. He misplaced just three of 84 passes in the competition (96.4% accuracy), the second-best passing accuracy of any midfielder in the competition this season who attempted more than 65 passes.

Since beating us 3-0 in April 2022, Crystal Palace have lost their last four games against us by an aggregate score of 12-1, with all of these encounters taking place in the Premier League.

We were knocked out of the League Cup by Crystal Palace in a fourth round replay in 1970/71, but eliminated them 5-1 on aggregate in the 1992/93 semi-final before lifting the trophy that season.

When we last met

It was a stunning win in the Premier League in our last meeting with Crystal Palace as we left the Eagles, then managed by Roy Hodgson, five times without replying.

Gabriel’s brace gave us a 2-0 lead at half-time before a goal from Leandro Trossard and two more goals from Gabriel Martinelli brought the game to an end.

It was our biggest win against Palace since a 7-0 victory in the FA Cup on January 27, 1934.
