Professional boxer Paul Bamba died at the age of 35, a few days after winning the title fight

Professional boxer Paul Bamba died unexpectedly just days after being crowned WBA gold cruiserweight champion, his manager and family announced on social media. He was 35.

R&B singer and songwriter Ne-Yo issued a joint statement with Bamba’s family on social media Friday confirming the news of his death. A cause of death was not announced.

“It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved son, brother, friend and boxing champion Paul Bamba, whose light and love touched countless lives,” the statement posted on Instagram said.

“He was a passionate but confident competitor with a relentless ambition to achieve greatness. Above all, he was a great human being who inspired many with his extraordinary drive and determination. We are heartbroken by his death and kindly ask for privacy and understanding during this difficult time as we deal with our grief together.”

Bamba signed a contract with Ne-Yo’s management company this year. He broke Mike Tyson’s record Just six days before his death, he captured the WBA gold cruiserweight championship and won 14 fights – all knockouts – in a single year.

“This year I set myself a goal. That’s exactly what I achieved,” Bamba said in an Instagram post after the fight.

“It hasn’t been easy, there have been many obstacles that I have adapted to, overcome and, despite extenuating circumstances, I have maintained the path we have taken. 14 fights. 14 knockouts that ended with the WBA GOLD cruiserweight world title,” he continued.

“I am blessed to have my family, my team and all my supporters along the way. That being said, if you achieve what some call an “outlandish goal,” pursue it. Anyone who thinks this isn’t as brave as you, prove people wrong!”
