Providence College’s athletic director apologizes for offensive chant against Brigham Young

Providence College faced backlash following Tuesday night’s basketball game against Brigham Young University at Amica Mutual Pavilion.

The PC student body was caught chanting offensive remarks toward the opposing team and fans, prompting an apology from athletic director Steven Napolillo.

“I would like to apologize to @BYUMBB, their coaches and their institution for the unacceptable chants from our student body tonight,” Napolillo said. “When it was brought to my attention, I went to the student body and made them stop. This does not reflect who Providence College is and what we stand for. We’re sorry.”

In videos circulating on social media, PC fans can be heard shouting, “F— the Mormons.”

Brigham Young University in Utah is sponsored by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Speaking to students at PC – a private Catholic college – on Wednesday, some intensified the chants while others condemned them.

Napolillo declined to comment on camera, citing his public apology to X.

NBC 10 News reached out to BYU staff but did not immediately receive a response.
