PSG’s Gianluigi Donnarumma suffers a serious facial injury in the Ligue 1 game

Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma was forced off the pitch in the first half of his team’s Ligue 1 game against Monaco on Wednesday after suffering a serious facial injury.

The 25-year-old Italy international was hit in the face by the studs on Monaco defender Wilfried Singo’s boot after he saved his shot on goal.

Donnarumma received immediate medical attention on the Stade Louis II pitch and was replaced by Matvei Safonov after 22 minutes.

Singo, who had been cautioned early in the first half, quickly apologized but escaped further punishment from referee Francois Letexier for the challenge.

Donnarumma left the pitch accompanied by medical staff and was pictured with a clearly bloody face.

A PSG statement at half-time said: “We send our best wishes to Gigio, who sustained a serious facial injury and had to abandon the game in the first half.”

Donnarumma has made 15 appearances in all competitions for PSG this season, keeping four clean sheets.

Monaco fell behind twice in Wednesday’s Ligue 1 game before two late goals from Goncalo Ramos and Ousmane Dembele secured a 4-2 win for PSG.

The win extends Luis Enrique’s side’s lead at the top of Ligue 1 to 10 points.
